Offerings left on the outdoor altar which faced a sheltered image of the deity.
Often characterized by observers as simply dedicated as tokens of thanks for a past occurrence, or a show of good will in hopes of a future boon, I believe the human impulse to share, to offer a gift, runs far deeper than wanting to make a bargain.
